President meets with CoE Secretary-General Thorbjørn Jagland


Within the frame of the social and political global forum “Against the Crime of Genocide,” President Serzh Sargsyan today held a meeting with Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe (CoE).

The President thanked Mr. Jagland for accepting the invitation to participate in the global forum. Serzh Sargsyan praised the participation of Thorbjørn Jagland as secretary-general of one of the key pan-European organization and his contribution to the forum works which, according to the President, reaffirms the CoE role in the protection of fundamental human rights.

At the meeting, the Armenian President once again wished Thorbjørn Jagland success in the second term of his post as CoE Secretary-General, noting that since his first term, he has undertaken quite serious and in-depth reforms main goal of which is to increase the CoE role as a pan-European organization for protection of human rights and to raise the effectiveness of the European Court of Human Rights. Serzh Sargsyan assured that Armenia is ready to continue its support for the reform process initiated by the CoE Secretary-General.

During the meeting, the interlocutors touched upon the Armenian Genocide Centennial and its importance, the events being held on that occasion which also include the global forum “Against the Crime of Genocide.”

The interlocutors also reflected upon the current global issues, the relationship between Armenia and Turkey and the regional challenges, as well as upon the Nagorno-Karabakh peace-process. The CoE Secretary-General stressed that the CoE fully supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, the activities of the co-chairs and attaches importance to mutual dialogue to establish peace between the parties.

Thorbjørn Jagland thanked the RA President for inviting him to the global forum in Yerevan, noting that it is a great honor for him to take part in this important forum and deliver a speech.
