President received the PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs for Armenia

 

President Serzh Sargsyan received today the PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs for Armenia Alan Meale and Giuseppe Galati. The parties discussed the process of implementation by Armenia of the commitments assumed with the accession to the CE, reforms carried out in our country, as well as the forthcoming programs. The President of Armenia stressed the importance of the regular and mutually useful meetings and discussions.


Noting that this year marks the 15th anniversary of Armenia’s accession to the Council of Europe, President Sargsyan noted with satisfaction that Armenia as well as the Council of Europe highly value progress registered in our country in the areas of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. According to the President, achievements, which are being reflected in different reports of the CE, result from the cooperation with our partners, including the Council of Europe.


Serzh Sargsyan expressed confidence that Armenia will implement properly the Armenia-CE Plan of Action for 2015-2018 which officially kicks off on May 21. The President underscored that Armenia will steadfastly continue with the reforms based on the conviction that there is no other way for achieving success and progress. Serzh Sargsyan said that our country is ready to cooperate even closer with the CE to achieve these goals.


The co-rapporteurs praised progress which has become noticeable in Armenia thanks to the reforms, expressed gratitude to the President of Armenia for his efforts to move forward democratic processes in Armenia and assured that the Council of Europe encourages the taken steps and anticipates continued success in this area.


The parties spoke also about the recent escalation in the NK conflict zone, which resulted from the ceasefire violation, and discussed possibilities of resuming the peace process.


At the request of the co-rapporteurs, President Serzh Sargsyan presented the entire situation in detail and his approaches regarding the prospect of re-starting peace negotiations.
