President receives Secretary-General of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs

President Serzh Sargsyan received Secretary-General of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (PCSWA) Paolo Cotta-Ramusino and member of the Movement’s Council Alexander Nikitin.

Welcoming the guests, the President of Armenia noted that he was well aware of the ideas, goals and efforts of the influential Pugwash Movement, which involves authoritative scientists, politicians and public figures all over the world in quest of a world free and safe from mass destruction weapons. According to President Sargsyan, Armenia highly appreciates the efforts of those people directly involved in this process.

The President noted that by honoring its international commitments as regards the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Armenia is actively involved in this process. Serzh Sargsyan underscored that stability and peace are of vital importance to our country. In this context, the Head of State stressed that Armenia is doing its best to keep our region safe from wars and, for this very reason, keeps speaking of a compromise in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, considering that problems like that can only be solved through negotiations.

Thankful for the reception and the President’s kind remarks, Paolo Cotta-Ramusino assured that the movement is doing everything possible to ensure communication between peoples in different regions and build a world safe from nuclear weapons. Noting that the Nobel Prize-winner movement is comprised of about 60 countries, the PCSWA Secretary-General asked President Sargsyan for his consent and support of their initiative to hold the Movement’s global forum in Yerevan in 2019.

According to Paolo Cotta-Ramusino, it can be a good platform for Armenia to present the country’s position and approaches to peace, stability and security issues and the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement process at the forum, which will bring together many prominent scientists and politicians from all over the world.

Serzh Sargsyan welcomed the idea of holding the forum in Yerevan and noted that Armenia is ready to assist the organizers and hold the event at a high level.
