Official visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to the Republic of Serbia

At the invitation of President Boris Tadic, President Serzh Sargsyan arrived on April 04 to the Republic of Serbia on a two-day official visit.

After the official welcoming ceremony for the Presidential delegation, the Presidents of Armenia and Serbia held a private meeting which was followed by the meeting in the extended format with the participation of the delegations.

After the talks, there took place the document signing ceremony. In particular, signed were two intergovernmental agreements - the Agreement on Air Transportation and the Agreement on the Abolition of Visas for the Holders of Diplomatic/Official Passports. The two sides signed also a Plan of Action of the Ministries of Culture of Armenia and Serbia on Cooperation in Cultural Area for 2011-2013.

Later, Presidents Sargsyan and Tadic summarized the results of the negotiations at the meeting with the representatives of mass media.

The Presidents assessed the working agenda as inclusive, and the negotiations as productive. They reiterated their will and determination to further strengthen bilateral relations and noted that recently reciprocal high-level visits and meetings in multilateral formats invigorated the political dialogue between Armenia and Serbia. Presidents Sargsyan and Tadic underscored that political dialogue between the two states, as well as cooperation in the economic, trade and cultural areas have significant potential. They agreed to put additional efforts in filling the agenda of cooperation with new content and making it more active. President Serzh Sargsyan said that at his Serb colleague’s request he presented the details of the current stage of the NK peace process. The two Presidents concurred that there is no alternative to a peaceful resolution and that use of force or threat to use force are unacceptable from the point of view of international law.

In the framework of the official visit, President Serzh Sargsyan met today with the Prime Minister of Serbia Mirko Cvetkovic and the Speaker of the National Assembly Slavica Dukic Dejanovic. At the meeting with Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic the parties spoke about the development of the Armenian-Serbian economic cooperation and possibilities of increasing the turn over. They also stressed that among other areas there is considerable potential for cooperation in the area of tourism.

With the Speaker of the Serbian National Assembly, President Sargsyan discussed issues related to the interparliamentary cooperation.

Tonight, Serbian President Boris Tadic hosted an official dinner in honor of the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.

On April 05 President Serzh Sargsyan, who is in Serbia on official visit, met with the Patriarch of Serbia His Holiness Irinej.

The President of Armenia and Patriarch of Serbia stressed the importance of warm relations existing between the Armenian Apostolic Church and Serb Orthodox Church. The interlocutors expressed hope that the existing cooperation will gradually expand and the contacts between the Armenian and Serb people will increase.

President Serzh Sargsyan noted that the Church had played an outstanding role in the Armenian history – in the absence of statehood it time and again assumed the noble mission of uniting and leading the nation. According to the President of Armenia, today too the Church is vital for the Armenians, just as it is for the Serbs.

At the meeting with His Holiness Irinej, Serzh Sargsyan also noted that it is symbolic that the Armenian peacekeeping unit in Kosovo, within responsibilities has also assumed the task of protecting Serbian churches in Kosovo.

Оn April 05, in Belgrade President Sargsyan met also with the representatives of the Armenian community of Serbia. The President of Armenia laid flowers at the Armenian cross-stone situated next to the Saint Archangel Gabriel Church in Belgrade. The memorial is dedicated to the Serb pilots who perished in Armenia in the wake of the 1988 earthquake. President Sargsyan conversed there with the relatives of the pilots.
