Official visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to Latvia

On March 09, at the invitation of the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, President Serzh Sargsyan arrived to the Republic of Latvia for a two-day official visit.

After the official welcoming ceremony of the Armenian President, Serzh Sargsyan and Valdis Zatlers held a private meeting which was followed by the meeting with the participation of the delegations.

Presidents Sargsyan and Zatlers noted with satisfaction that in recent years reciprocal visits and high-level contacts have promoted the political dialogue and strengthening relations in cultural, education and other areas.

Speaking about the 2009 state visit of the Latvian President to Armenia, the parties noted that a number of agreements reached during President Zatler’s visit to Armenia have already been implemented. This visit of the President of Armenia is aimed to keep on the efficient dialogue held in December 2009 and further promote and deepen friendly relations between the two countries.

The sides stressed the importance of establishing a joint Armenian-Latvian intergovernmental commission and opening embassies in Yerevan and Riga respectively.

The meeting was followed by the ceremony of signing official documents. In particular, signed were the Program of Cultural Cooperation between Armenia and Latvia for 2011-2013 and the Protocol on Cooperation in the Area of Eurointegration between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Latvia. After the document signing ceremony the Presidents Sargsyan and Zatlers gave a joint press conference.

On March 09, after a meeting with the President of Lativa Valdis Zatler, President Serzh Sargsyan laid a wreath at the Monument of Freedom.

Later, the President of Armenia arrived to the Parliament of Latvia. At the meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament Mrs. Solvita Aboltina, President Serzh Sargsyan spoke about the Armenian-Latvian interparliamentary cooperation. The parties underscored the advanced relations between the legislatures of the two states and noted with satisfaction that friendship groups formed in the two parliaments cooperate successfully and taking into consideration the existing potential are ready to further their interaction.

President Sargsyan also noted that Armenia could learn from the Latvian experience of collaboration with the European Union and reconciliation of the national legislation with the European standards.

In view of the fact that UNESCO named Yerevan the World Book Capital of 2012, while Riga was declared Europe’s Cultural Capital of 2014, President Sargsyan and the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament Mrs. Aboltina assessed it as a new and excellent opportunity to enhance contacts and to develop cultural cooperation between Latvia and Armenia.

In the framework of the official visit, President Serzh Sargsyan together with the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers participated at the opening of the Armenian-Latvian Business Forum.

On March 09, the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers and Mrs. Lilita Zatlers hosted a state dinner in honor of the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, who is in Latvia on official visit.

President Serzh Sargsyan, who is Latvia on official visit, held on March 10 a working breakfast with the Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Dobrovskis.

President Sargsyan and Prime Minister Dobrovskis discussed prospects of development of the Armenian-Latvian economic relations, stressing that existing sufficient potential and necessary prerequisites should be used to their fullest. Among promising areas of cooperation the parties highlighted tourism, metallurgy and some other areas. They also stressed the importance of creating an Armenian-Latvian intergovernmental commission.

President Sargsyan and Prime Minister Dobrovskis spoke also about regular visits at different levels, active interaction, strengthening of ties between the business communities of the two countries which, according to the interlocutors, can be best served by the business forums. In this context, they stressed the importance of Yerevan-Riga regular flights.

On March 10, in Riga President Serzh Sargsyan visited also the Armenian Church, where he met with the representatives of the Armenian community.

At the meeting the President of Armenia said, “I have come with a humble mission of passing to you greetings and good wishes from our people, our Motherland and reaffirm that regardless of where Armenians live – in Riga or Vilnius, Paris or Los Angeles, Yerevan or Vanadzor, we are one nation and our strength in our unity.”

According to Serzh Sargsyan, empowerment of Spyurq means empowerment of Armenia and vise versa – empowerment of Armenia means empowerment of Spyurq.

The President of Armenia noted with satisfaction that representatives of the Armenian community, being part of the Latvian society, have not forgotten their motherland, their native language and their faith.

President Sargsyan spoke also about regional developments, particularly the current stage of the NK peace process.
