President receives Latvian foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics


President Serzh Sargsyan today received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics.

The President welcomed the dignitary to our country and expressed the hope that his visit will give a new impulse to Armenian-Latvian relations, as a result of meetings and discussions promising cooperation spheres and further bilateral steps aimed at development of relations will be outlined.

According to the President, frequent reciprocal visits, consultations and dialogue conducted at foreign ministerial level are an important prerequisite for deepening of interstate cooperation.

At the meeting, the parties attached great importance to the cooperation between Armenia and the EU and as a country which is to assume the presidency of the EU, to Latvia’s support for further enhancing and boosting cooperation. The Armenian President noted that the EU has been and continues to be one of Armenia’s vital partners with which its collaboration is first of all based on a set of common values, and both before the EU membership and afterwards our country will keep on developing an agenda for Europe and promote cooperation under new realities.

Foreign minister Rinkevics underscored that Latvia understands and respects Armenia’s decision to join the EEU and also knows that it is in no way impedes Armenia’s relations with the EU.

In terms of strengthening bilateral ties, the Latvian foreign minister placed great value on conducting active political dialogue and promoting economic cooperation which greatly depends on the works of the intergovernmental commission.

President Serzh Sargsyan and foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics also stressed the importance of promoting collaboration between the two countries’ legislatures.
