President receives Secretary-General of European Ombudsman Institute Josef Siegele

President Serzh Sargsyan received today Josef Siegele, secretary-general of the European Ombudsman Institute, who has arrived in Armenia to take part in the conference titled “Human Rights in the Draft of Amendments to the Constitution.” Armenia’s president welcomed the guest and stressed that Armenia attaches great importance to implementing continued reforms in the areas of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. According to the president, our country has made some progress in those areas, which has been made possible owing to the support and effective cooperation of Armenia’s international partners and first of all, to its European partners.

The president welcomed the Yerevan conference which, he was certain, gives a broad opportunity to hold free discussions and exchange professional opinions in an unrestricted environment. According to him, the subsequent expert opinions become an important guide for the further improvement of the given area.
At the meeting, the parties also reflected upon the process of RA constitutional amendments. Josef Siegele presented his impressions of the draft of amendments to the RA Constitution and mentioned that it is a great step forward aimed at implementing reforms and a good path for Armenia.

President Serzh Sargsyan assured the guest that Armenia is determined and consistent in the implementation of reforms, considering it the only single way to ensure the development of our country. The president noted that the given idea also lies at the core of the draft of amendments to the Constitution.

The secretary-general of the European Ombudsman Institute attached value to its organization’s productive cooperation also with Nagorno-Karabakh in the sphere of human rights protection, expressing his satisfaction with the works carried out by Nagorno-Karabakh in that sphere.
