President receives Chairman of RF Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko

President Serzh Sargsyan received today the delegation headed by Valentina Matviyenko, Chairman of the Federation Council of the RF Federal Assembly, which has arrived in Armenia on a two-day official visit.

At the outset, Armenia’s president once again extended his sympathy over the crash of the airplane flying from Sharm El Sheikh to St Petersburg, which claimed multiple lives. The president proposed to hold a minute of silence prior going on to negotiations.

The RA president and the chairman of the Federation Council of the RF Federal Assembly discussed the steps to further deepen and enhance the multifaceted Armenian-Russian agenda and the bilateral strategic partnership, as well as attached importance to the role of legislative bodies in that process. In that context, Serzh Sargsyan and Valentina Matviyenko spoke highly of the activities carried out by the Armenian-Russian Inter-parliamentary Committee.

The interlocutors also placed importance on the collaboration between the Armenian and Russian regions, which, they agreed, is stimulated by regular inter-regional conferences. President Serzh Sargsyan welcomed Valentina Matviyenko’s participation in the 4th Armenian-Russian Inter-Regional Conference which has coincided with the term of her official visit. According to the president, the conference provides an important platform to discuss pressing items on the Armenian-Russian agenda, develop effective mechanisms and outline new promising dimensions for decentralized cooperation. Armenia’s president also attached weight to the participation of youth organizations in the Yerevan conference which are going to be the driving force of Armenian-Russian relations in the future.

At the meeting, the parties stressed the importance of productive cooperation in international parliamentary platforms in terms of promoting active collaboration between the two countries’ parliaments.

The RA president and the Chairman of the Federation Council of the RF Federal Assembly also exchanged views on contemporary international issues, touched upon regional challenges and the current stage of the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.
