Serzh Sargsyan received delegation of the Belgian Senate headed by the President of the Belgian Senate Christine Defraigne

President Serzh Sargsyan received today delegation headed by the President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Belgium Christine Defraigne.

The President of Armenia welcomed the guests to our country and stressed the importance of the parliamentary diplomacy in the development of the bilateral relations. “You are in the country where Belgium is perceived as a friendly state and a trustful partner. Our relations are based on amicable historical ties, mutual trust, the same system of values, and a comparable vision for development.

Madam Defraigne, we are particularly pleased to welcome you to Armenia, because you are one of those political figures who are constantly thoughtful of our people’s problems. You have a considerate position towards Armenia and issues which concern the Armenians, and for many years you have spared no effort to strengthen the Armenian-Belgian relations. In Armenia, you are always a dear and expected guest,” said President Serzh Sargsyan.

The President of the Belgian Senate thanked Serzh Sargsyan for kind words and warm reception and noted that she agreed with the assessment given by the President of Armenia. “Speaking of our common values, I would like to say that back in 1998, the Belgian Senate one of the first among the European countries which adopted a resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. It was a forceful resolution which in 2015 was followed by the resolution of the House of Representatives and the statement by Prime Minister Charles Michel which left no room for uncertainty. This is very important because we owe it to the next generation,” said Christine Defraigne.

At the meeting, the parties discussed the possibilities of developing relations and expanding the Armenian-Belgian cooperation in the areas of mutual interest. They also spoke about regional challenges and problems, and the NK peace process.
