President Sargsyan participated at the Summits of the CIS Council of Heads of State and the EurAsEC Interstate Council

On October 9-10, President Serzh Sargsyan participated at the summit of the Council of the CIS Heads of State and the session of the intergovernmental council of the EurAsEC in Bishkek.

The summit of the CIS Council opened with the meeting of the Heads of State in a restricted format which was followed by the meeting in the extended format.

The leaders of the CIS discussed and adopted the strategy for the CIS economic development till 2020, which summarizes the prospects and opportunities of the socio-economic development in the context of enhanced economic cooperation among the CIS member states.

The strategy will provide for the advancement of the integration processes in the economic area, utilizing to the utmost the economic opportunities of the each of the member states, expanding their mutually beneficial cooperation, raising their economic competitiveness, assisting in entering the global economy, and hoisting the standard of living for their citizens.

At the meeting discussed were also issues related to the cooperation in the area of transportation till 2020.

At the February, 2008 informal meeting of the CIS Heads of State, it was decided that the main area of cooperation for the next year would be the energy area, and the document to identify the energy sector as the pivotal area of cooperation in 2009 was signed by the leaders of the CIS member states. Adopted was also the convention on the cross-border cooperation among the CIS states which is a necessary instrument for creating the legal field for the cross-border cooperation.

The Heads of State singed also documents on declaring 2009 the Year of Youth and 2010 the Year of Knowledge and Innovation, on the main activities for the celebration of the 65th Anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, and adopted a decision on establishing a joint anniversary medal.

They also adopted the program for joint cooperation against illegal migration for 2009-2011, which will allow to further improve coordination among the member states regarding the issue. A number of other documents were also signed at the conclusion of the meeting.

At the capital of Kyrgyzstan, the President of Armenia also participated at the closed session of the intergovernmental council of the President Serzh Sargsyan participated at the summit of the Council of the CIS Heads of State and the session of the intergovernmental council of the EurAsEC in which Armenia has the observer’s status.
