Official visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to the Republic of Poland


President Serzh Sargsyan, who is in Poland on official visit met on June 25 with the President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski. Before the meeting, the official ceremony of welcoming the President of Armenia took place at the Presidential Palace.

After the official ceremony of welcoming the President of Armenia, Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Bronisław Komorowski held a bilateral meeting which was followed by the negotiations in the extended format. After the negotiations, there took place the ceremony of signing documents aimed at the development of the bilateral cooperation in a number of areas. In particular, signed were the Agreement between the Government of Armenia and the Government of Poland on the international trucking, the Memorandum of Understanding between the RA State Revenue Committee and the Customs Service of the Republic of Poland on fight against the breaches of customs law and development of partnership, Agreement on Cooperation in the area of agriculture between the RA Ministry of Agriculture and RP Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Declaration of Intent between the RA Ministry of Nature Protection and RP Ministry of Ecology on cooperation in the area of nature protection. Presidents Sargsyan and Komorowski summarized the results of the negotiations at the joint press conference.

President Serzh Sargsyan in Warsaw visited the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier, laid a wreath and paid tribute to the fallen. After signing the Visitor’s Book, President Serzh Sargsyan together with the President of Poland also laid flowers and paid tribute at the memorial plate of Yadviga Zarugievich, who was born in an Armenian-Polish family. This Armenian woman, whose son had been killed in the war, was given this honor because on October 29, 1925 she had been entrusted with the privilege to choose the remnants of an unknown soldier to be interred in Warsaw Memorial which is considered Poland’s national symbol.

On the first day of his visit, President Sargsyan also had a meeting with the President (Marshal) of the Polish Sejm Bogdan Borusewicz and Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

At the meeting with Bogdan Borusewicz, President Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of strengthening the interparliamentary relations and active contacts of the parliamentarians. The interlocutors noted also the importance of the decentralized cooperation as well as the role of the Armenian-Polish community in the strengthening the relations between the two friendly states and peoples.

The President of Armenia and Prime Minister Donald Tusk mentioned with satisfaction that the bilateral relations have registered considerable progress: there took place sessions of the Armenian-Polish intergovernmental commission, business forums and the interagency cooperation has also become more dynamic. At the same time, they underlined that there is still great potential to be utilized, particularly in the trade and economic area. At the meeting, the parties stressed the importance of establishing a closer cooperation between the governments and different agencies of the executive branch and discussed issues related to the prospects of the expansion of the Polish business presence in Armenia. The President of Armenia and Prime Minister of Poland spoke also about the Armenia-EU negotiations on the Association Agreement and the process of implementation in Armenia of comprehensive reforms.

On June 25, Serzh Sargsyan attended also the ceremony of inauguration of the Armenian square in Warsaw, installation and consecration of a cross-stone.

In the evening, Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Bronisław Komorowski participated at the closing ceremony of the Armenian-Polish Business Forum.

The President of the Polish Republic Bronisław Komorowski hosted an official dinner in honor of the President of Armenia and his delegation.

In the framework of his official visit to Poland, President Serzh Sargsyan on June 26 visited Lyubeletsi region, the former Majdanek concentration camp located near Lyublin, which now serves as the Memorial complex. Accompanied by the ceremonial troops, the President laid a wreath in the mausoleum of the complex and paid tribute to the memory of the tens of thousands victims which were barbarically exterminated by the Nazis in this concentration camp, and made an inscription in the Honorary Guest Book. At the Conference center of the complex, President Serzh Sargsyan made a speech.

Afterwards, the President left for Zamość town, toured the downtown, visited the town museum and on the Armenian Street of Zamość observed buildings constructed by the Armenians. President Serzh Sargsyan who is the Polish Republic on the official visit, on June 26 at the Consulate Hall of the City Hall of Zamość town met with the representatives of the Armenian-Polish community. The President of Armenia gave a speech for the participants of the meeting.
