Working visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to the Republic of Latvia

 

President Serzh Sargsyan, who has paid a working visit to the Republic of Latvia to take part in the summit of the EU Eastern Partnership, on May 21 had a meeting with President Andris Bērziņš of the Republic of Latvia in Riga.

The two countries’ presidents greatly appreciated the political dialogue between Armenia and Latvia which has been developing in the spirit of mutual understanding, and the dynamics of interstate relations, and stressed the importance of boosting that dynamics. Apart from the bilateral agenda, Serzh Sargsyan and Andris Bērziņš discussed issues pertaining to the further course of cooperation between the European Union and the Republic of Armenia.

At the meeting, the Latvian president noted that he considers Armenia’s decision to join the Eurasian Economic Union pragmatic and welcomed the RA’s balanced multilateral approach. According to him, presently the EU has started to value its effectiveness and usefulness more and more.

President Serzh Sargsyan underscored that Armenia also seeks to promote economic relations with the friendly country of Latvia. The president reiterated Armenia’s commitment to the implementation of reforms based on common principles and to the enhancement of democracy in the country.

The presidents also reflected upon regional issues and challenges present in the South Caucasus.

As part of his working visit to the Republic of Latvia, President Serzh Sargsyan on May 21 had a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The interlocutors discussed issues pertaining to Armenian-German interstate relations and expressed satisfaction with the fact that in recent years, Armenia and Germany have significantly enlarged and enriched their cooperation agenda through around six dozen cooperation agreements.

At the meeting, President Serzh Sargsyan expressed his gratitude to the German government for its continued support for Armenia.

The Armenian president and the German chancellor touched upon Armenia-European Union relations and their development prospects. The RA president attached importance to Germany’s role in deepening those relations as a key player in the EU.

The parties also reflected upon the Armenian Genocide Centennial and the respective remembrance and commemorative events which took place in Armenia and numerous countries of the world, including Germany. President Serzh Sargsyan expressed his gratitude to German authorities for their position on the condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

At the meeting, the interlocutors exchanged views on issues and challenges present in the South Caucasus region, including the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process within the frame of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship.
