On April 30 President Serzh Sarkissian received the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Armenia Seid Ali Saghaian.

The Ambassador of Iran said that his country attaches great importance to the further development of the relations with Armenia. He noted that the presence of the President Ahmadinejad’s personal representative at the inauguration ceremony of Serzh Sarkissian is yet another proof of the Iranian side’s intentions.

Stressing the strategic importance of the bilateral relations, the two sides noted with satisfaction that thanks to mutual efforts the Armenian-Iranian cooperation is on the rise.

Serzh Sarkissian assessed the bilateral relations as stable and progressing and said that Armenia is determined to expand the framework of cooperation. The President of Armenia stressed, in particular, the importance of the programs in the energy area and placed among priorities the necessity to increase the trade turnover as well as a closer interaction between the private sectors of the two countries.

At the meeting the parties spoke also about regional issues and the NK peace process. The interlocutors agreed that we live in a rather complicated region and that efforts of the countries of the region should be directed at the maintenance of security and stability. According to Ambassador Saghaian, Iran values Armenia’s reserved attitude toward the permanent belligerent calls coming from the one of the regional countries.

Serzh Sarkissian welcomed Iran’s balanced approach toward the Nagorno Karabagh issue. The President of Armenia reiterated that Armenia is committee to the peaceful resolution of the conflict in the framework of international law and in accordance with the right of people to self-determination.
