Today President Serzh Sarkissian received Ms. Consuelo Vidal, Resident Coordinator of the UN and Resident Representative of the UNDP in Yerevan

Today President Serzh Sarkissian received Ms. Consuelo Vidal, Resident Coordinator of the UN and Resident Representative of the UNDP in Yerevan.

The President of Armenia hailed continuous programs and projects of different UN agencies in our country which are aimed at the strengthening of our statehood and development of economy. Expressing satisfaction with the close and constructive cooperation, Serzh Sarkissian said that the Armenian side is ready to deepen it and to better utilize the provided opportunities.

According to Ms. Consuelo Vidal, Armenia is one of the most active members of the UN and brings its positive input to the works of the organization. She presented to President Sarkissian activities of the twelve specialized agencies acting in Armenia, noting that they want their work to be beneficial to the Armenian people. The Resident Coordinator also said that currently a new, a four- year plan of the UN-Armenia cooperation is being developed. She invited the Government of Armenia to identify the areas and directions which are of primary importance for the country and where the UN assistance is anticipated.

Serzh Sarkissian said that he views the transfer from the humanitarian to development programs as a priority, expressing at the same time wish that joint programs become more tangible and aim-oriented. He stressed in particular the importance of providing Armenia with know-how and expertise, noting that the capabilities of the Government grow each year and that the efficient and purposeful utilization of these capabilities is currently the main problem.

At the meeting discussed were also issues of fuel and food pricing in the world market, the related issue of food security and possibilities of cooperation in that area.

The two sides spoke also about the social and economic conditions of the refugees, noting that the introduction of the system of housing certificates has been an important step in that direction.

At the conclusion of the meeting Ms. Vidal invited the President of Armenia to visit the Yerevan office of the United Nations, to observe first hand its activities and projects.
