President Serzh Sargsyan received Robert Simons, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of NATO

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received Robert Simons, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of NATO for Caucasus and Central Asia.

The President of Armenia said that the European direction continues to be one of the priorities of the Armenian foreign policy and that cooperation with NATO is one of its most significant components. According to Serzh Sargsyan, cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization will continue since Armenia views it as part of the country’s security structure.

Robert Simons passed to President Sargsyan greetings of Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the Secretary General of NATO. The high ranking official assessed the Armenia-NATO cooperation as very efficient and noted that there were good opportunities for the expansion of the cooperation.

The parties exchanged views on the issues related to the maintenance of security and stability in the region. The President of Armenia presented Armenia’s standpoint to the events which have taken place in the South Caucasus, on the NK peace process, and on the recent developments in the Armenian-Turkish relations.

Robert Simons said that NATO welcomed and supported Armenia’s initiative and determination towards the normalization of relations with Turkey.
