International gas summit kicked off in Moscow
Today, by the invitation of the Russian President, Dmitri Medvedev, President Serzh Sargsyan arrived in Moscow on a working visit to participate at the international summit which is to deal with the gas issues. The Summit is attended by the Presidents of Russia and Armenia, the Heads of Government of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and the Czech Republic, which is currently presiding in the EU, as well as by the official representative of the European Commission.
Opening the meeting, the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitri Medvedev thanked those present for accepting his invitation and for participating at the discussion on the most important and urgent issues. According to Dmitri Medvedev, recently the issues related to the gas transportation have become very complicated and the Moscow Summit is aimed at finding the ways to deal with the situation. The President of Russia noted that a way out from this crisis must be found most expeditiously – to restore the supply of natural gas to Europe, to find dependable mechanisms for gas transit which is only possible through the joint efforts. According to the President of Russia, life has proved that the existing gas supply system and the relevant international legal field are inadequate, and the issue demands new solutions.
It should be noted that according to 2008 statistics, Armenia has been annually importing 2, 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, transportations being conducted by “Hayrusgazard” company. Presently, with gasification covering 93 per cent of Armenia’s territory we find ourselves among the world’s first three leading nations in the area of gasification, while starting from 2006 Armenia has been on the top of the list for the CIS countries.
At the conclusion of the works of the Moscow Summit, the President of the Russian Federation will give an official dinner in the honor of the participants of the Summit.
