President Serzh Sargsyan received the Minister of Roads Transportation of the IRI Hamid Behbahani

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received the Minister of Roads Transportation of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hamid Behbahani and his delegation.

Welcoming the high guest, the President of Armenia stressed two important features of the Minister’s visit to Armenia: first, the project on the construction of the Armenia-Iran railroad has become more precise. Second, the Minister’s visit is taking place on the eve of the Armenian President’s official visit to Iran and provides another opportunity to discuss possibilities of expanding the bilateral relations.

Minister Behbahani conveyed to the President of Armenia warm greetings from the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and noted that Iran highly values its relations with Armenia.

The two sides concurred that Armenia and Iran are close neighbors as well as friends. According to Serzh Sargsyan, that friendship stood the test of time on many occasions and especially in difficult situations.

Minister Bahbahani expressed confidence that the upcoming visit of the President of Armenia to Iran would become another impetus for deepening the bilateral cooperation. Assessing his meetings with the Armenian colleagues as useful and productive, he said that he observed willingness to establish serious working relations in all areas.

The President of Armenia stressed the importance of creating opportunities for more frequent contacts between the two sides and implementation of promising programs, highlighting in that context the importance of establishing a direct rail link between Armenia and Iran which would have a special significance for the entire region. The Minister of Roads and Transportation of Iran said that a working group has already been created for practical studies on that particular project. In addition, a preliminary signing of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries of the construction of the railroad has already been completed and the official signing of the document will take place during President Sargsyan’s official visit to Iran.

The two sides spoke also about the enhancement of trade between the two states and avenues of facilitating bilateral cooperation.
