President Serzh Sargsyan met with the students, who have been admitted to a number of prestigious universities abroad and awarded fellowships of the Luys Foundation and the Luys Partner program to study there. Present at the meeting was also the Prime Minister of Armenia, Tigran Sarkissian.

Serzh Sargsyan congratulated the scholarship recipients on their admission to the world’s top universities and on receiving financial assistance from the Luys Foundation.

Noting, that such an opportunity has been a dream for many young people, Serzh Sargsyan said, “Today, it became a reality. The state not only emphasizes the importance of obtaining higher education but actually funds it. You are the first students, who have been admitted to the one of the world’s top 25 education establishments. I believe that your example will inspire many young people and every year more and more Armenian students will be studying in the best universities of the world.”

The President of Armenia said that one of the main functions of the state is to create opportunities for its citizens to receive high-class education and excellent knowledge. He identified two ways to achieve that goal, “one is what the educational program of the Luys Foundation has been doing – assisting gifted young people; the second is the reformation of our educational system and bringing it in line with international standards.”

Serzh Sargsyan said that the activities of the Foundation would be judged not only against the number of our students in the universities abroad, but also against the participation of those young individuals in the resolution of the problems facing our country, one of which is the reformation of the area of education itself. “Our higher education institutions have to provide modern education and be compatible,” the President of Armenia underscored.

Noting that constant craving for knowledge and education is one of our national trends, President Sargsyan said, “We should remember that after the creation of the Armenian alphabet, the first disciples of Mesrop Mashtots were sent all over the world to obtain knowledge and bring it back to Armenia. Today, it is not exaggeration to say that all those young people who receive excellent education and return to Armenia are fulfilling the same mission. In the 21st century it is absolutely clear that to have a low level of education means to have a low living standard.”

Once again congratulating the fellows of the Luys Foundation, the President of Armenia repeated, “I have said on many occasions that the President of Armenia ought to meet and shake hands with those young people who study well and obtain excellent knowledge, since it benefits not only that particular individual but our entire society.”

Serzh Sargsyan conversed with the students on the topics that they were interested in.

The students said that they were grateful to the President of Armenia that like many other countries Armenia too has a program which funds students’ education.

The President of Armenia said that our possibilities would constantly build up and besides, it is anticipated that this would serve as an example for the establishment of other, similar foundations.

The students asked the President how he perceives the future of the graduates of the Luys Foundation. In their opinion, even excellent education doesn’t guarantee a good job or a government position.

Serzh Sargsyan said that currently the lack of qualified cadre is a huge problem and there is a need for well-educated young people. “However, we should not forget that excellent education should also be applicable, it is necessary to be able to use that knowledge properly and get practical skills. The state is interested in having in government structures young professionals. We are going through large-scale reforms and are eager to use in the process fellows of the Luys Foundation, students who studied abroad through the fellowships of other foundations, as well as to use the knowledge and skills of the best students who study in our own institutions,” said the President of Armenia.

Serzh Sargsyan welcomed the intention of the fellows along with their studies to actively engage in intercultural contacts and represent Armenia and the Armenian people. The President said that studying abroad they willy-nilly become the “ambassadors” of Armenia, since at the places of their study they would shape the impression of Armenia and her people.

The President of Armenia handed the fellows of the Luys Foundation their certificates, wished them all the success and assured that they would always be supported by the state.
