President Serzh Sargsyan visited Gyumri to pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the devastating earthquake

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan visited Gyumri to pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the devastating earthquake of 1988.

The President of the Republic laid a wreath at the Innocent Victims, Kind Hearts memorial and attended the liturgy served in the memory of the victims.

Later, President Sargsyan visited the construction site of the sugar factory in Akhurian community. He familiarized with the ongoing works and preliminary operations for sugar beet processing.

The construction of the sugar factory started in simmer of 2006 and so far almost 92 million USD have been invested in its construction. The construction is to be concluded by April 2010, and the production of sugar will start in mid-May. The factory has a twenty-four hour technological cycle and is designed to process not only half processed materials but also local beets.

To restore sugar production in Armenia and to organize the processing of sugar beets in Armenia, in June 2008 the government adopted the Concept of developing beet production in Armenia. The Ministry of Agriculture together with the administrations of Shirak and Lori marzes conducts necessary activities to reinstate by 2010 sugar production in these regions.

President Sargsyan visited also Isahakian community of Ani area and participated at the ceremony of finalizing the gasification of 21 communities in Ani, Artik, Ashotsk communities and observed the launch of the natural gas flow, which was signified by the symbolic gas burning ceremony. Gasification of these areas was one of the pre-election pledges of President Sargsyan and was realized by the Program of economic development of rural areas.

In 2009, through this Program a supply system was built in Shirak marz, which allowed 25 communities to receive or resume receiving natural gas. In 21 communities the construction works have already been concluded, and in 4 of them will be concluded by the end of the year. Thanks to these activities, twenty-one thousand people in 25 communities will have natural gas in their households.
