President Serzh Sargsyan received the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received Miguel Angel Moratinos, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, which is currently presiding in the European Union. Mr. Moratinos and his delegation have arrived to Armenia in the framework of a regional visit.

Congratulating the Minister on Spain’s presidency in the EU and on entering into force of the Treaty of Lisbon, Serzh Sargsyan hailed the current level of the Armenia-EU cooperation and political dialogue and stressed the importance of its further deepening. The President of Armenia expressed gratitude for the financial, technical and expert assistance provided by the EU to our country.

“This visit proves the EU’s strategic vision regarding the necessity of deepening the European Union’s relations with Armenia,” Miguel Angel Moratinos noted. He also expressed confidence that reciprocal high level visits would open a new page in the Armenia-EU relations and provide opportunities to exchange views regarding our common future. “Today, our dialogue envisages a dynamic agenda and during her presidency in the EU, Spain is ready to work toward the further enhancement of the relations in the entire spectrum of cooperation,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain stressed.

President Sargsyan and Minister Moratinos spoke in detail about the priorities on the Armenia-EU cooperation agenda, discussed the possibilities of signing a free trade agreement, easing the visa regime, and negotiations on signing the association agreement.

At the meeting, the parties talked about also the Armenia-Turkey normalization process, regional security issues, and the NK peace process. President Sargsyan presented Yerevan’s official position on all these issues. Miguel Angel Moratinos expressed confidence that use of force and threat to use force cannot be a means to solve the NK conflict. “Solution to the conflict can be only peaceful, through diplomatic means,” Minister Moratinos stressed.

President Serzh Sargsyan and the delegation of the European Union continued discussion of the abovementioned issues during the working dinner.
