Today, the award-giving ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace. The RA Presidential awards were handed for a contribution of global significance in the area of information technologies. The 2009 Presidential Award was given to the Former Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Intel Corporation Craig Barrett.

President Sargsyan speaks at the ceremony of granting the RA Presidential Award for the input of global significance in the area of Information Technologies

“Mr. and Mrs. Barrett,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am happy to welcome the long-serving former Chief Executive Officer and President of the Intel Corporation Mr. Barrett and his spouse. Here and today Mr. Barrett is being handed the very first Award for the input of global significance in the area of Information Technologies.

There is no need to introduce the Intel Corporation or Mr. Barrett. Anyone, who starts his or her day by turning on the computer, knows these two names pretty well. This Award is Armenia’s modest contribution to the global development of Information Technologies. With this Award we honor Dr. Barrett and acknowledge Intel’s input in the area of high technologies and dissemination of knowledge all over the world.

The importance of information technologies is hardly to be overestimated. Probably, one of its crucial achievements is the accessibility and improvement of the global literacy level. Undoubtedly, information technologies have genuinely revolutionized these two areas.

The foremost reason behind the establishment of this award was to attract attention of the Armenian youth toward information technologies. We will encourage their studies and work in this area, we will search for and find new ways and means to do it. Today, in the presence of Mr. Barrett I send a message to our young people: The future belongs to those who are endowed with knowledge, kindness and creativity, who rely on intellectual powers and possess the art of finding solutions.

We are a nation of unique, bright and entrepreneurial individuals. It means that we have a proper capital necessary for the development of IT area – brains and aptitude. These two combined are working miracles, because neither money, nor wires, nor computer programs can surpass creative talents of the human. We have unlimited potential for development in that area.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Notably, Mr. Barrett has not limited himself with the IT area exclusively. You will see in his curriculum that along with his main activities, he is also the Chair of the UN Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). At the same time, he is actively involved in the implementation of various national programs in his own country – the United States of America and served on the US Presidential Advisory Boards. Mr. Barrett is often described as a leading advocate of global knowledge improvement, a person who has always been able to look ahead and insist that the future belongs to knowledge.

This is my idea of the modern businessman. I want the businessmen of Armenia to reckon about this example. I want all our entrepreneurs to be like that . It’s not about benevolence. It is about the ability to assume responsibility, about the ability to refrain from short-lived and momentary profit if in the long run it can jeopardize the well-being of the society. It is about not surrendering to the temptations of big money – greed and arrogance. I am happy to state that there are such businessmen in Armenia, quite a few. I mean not the scope, of course, but the attitude.

I thank the Armenian branch of the Synopsis company and its Executive Director Rich Goldman. From day one of the inception of this award, Synopsis and Mr. Goldman personally have been actively involved in the works to make it a reality. I also thank the Co-Chairs of the Prize-Awarding Committee, members of the advisory and executive committees, and members of the Selection Commission, as well as all those who contributed to the implementation of this program.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Barrett,

I am glad to see you in Yerevan. I hope that during your stay you will learn about Armenia, our history and culture and come to love Armenia and our people. As for us, we are always ready to welcome our friends and give them our affection, warmth and esteem. Mr. Barrett, Mrs. Barrett, I am very happy today, and thank you.”

Craig Barrett spoke after receiving the RA Presidential Award from the President Sargsyan,

“I am really happy to be here today, representing the coryphaei and supporters of this field, who are creating amazing technologies. I am also happy to be here, in Armenia and to be the first recipient of the Award. I am here not as an individual but as the representative of thousands of people who have been advancing the IT area for decades and brought it to the current level.”

According to Craig Barrett, the impact of information technologies on all areas of human live is increasing year by year. In particular, it facilitates economic development and has a huge impact on the areas of education and health care. The role of information technologies becomes more and more prominent in raising the efficiency and openness of the modern governance systems.

After the award ceremony, President Sargsyan had a private meeting with Mr. Barrett which was followed by a dinner in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Barrett.

The RA Presidential Award for the input of global significance in the area of Information Technologies was established by the 2009 July 6 decree of President Serzh Sargsyan and is aimed at the development of the mentioned area. It’s an annual award for exceptional technological, educational, managerial, financial or other achievements which result or have resulted in a breakthrough in the IT area.
