Today, the President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev attended in Gyumri the opening ceremony of the Memorial dedicated to the Armenian-Russian friendship – the Hill of Honor.

In his remarks, the President of Armenia underlined that support of the Russian troops had historic significance for the Armenian people, noting that in the Russian-Turkish war the most brutal battles of the Caucasian Front had been fought right here and many Russian soldiers and officers had found their resting place on the Hill of Honor. According to President Sargsyan, the restoration of the Hill of Honor is yet another symbol of the Armenian-Russian friendship. “Indeed, those who forget the past, don’t have future. Here, at the Hill of Honor the Memorial of the Russian officers has been restored - the Memorial, which in 1919 was blown up in Kars – the city which after tragic historical developments had ended up on the other side of the border. We respect our history and memory of the fallen troops, who had found their resting place in the Armenian soil. Paying tribute to our heroes, we must urge our younger generation to live in peace and engage in creative work. Be worthy of the memory of the martyrs,” said President Sargsyan.

The President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev also spoke at the unveiling of the Hill of Honor Memorial.

The Presidents of Armenia and Russia laid a wreath at the Memorial of the Fallen Russian Officers, planted a Silver Fir on the territory of the Monument, and visited the Russian Chapel located there.

Presidents Sargsyan and Medvedev returned from Gyumri to Yerevan to participate at the unofficial Summit of the Heads of the CSTO member states which is commencing today.

Note: The Hill of Honor encloses the remains of the Russian troops killed during the 1855 Russian-Turkish war. During several decades the Memorial was largely neglected, until 2009 when through the joint efforts of the administrations of the Armenian Shirak region, Ulyanovsk region of the RF and the Armenian-Russian Task of Honor organization the territory was rebuilt and beautified and the Memorial dedicated to the memory of the Russian officers was erected.
