On October 10, at the invitation of the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, President of the Republic of Slovenia Danilo Türk, accompanied by his spouse Barbara Miklic Türk, arrived to Armenia on official visit.

The official ceremony of welcoming the high guest took place today at the Presidential Palace and was followed by a private meeting of President Sargsyan and President Türk. Later, the negotiations were continued with the participation of the official delegations.

Greeting the high guest, Serzh Sargsyan expressed hope that the first visit of the President of Slovenia to Armenia would become a strong impetus for the development of relations and expansion of bilateral cooperation. Stressing that Armenia and Slovenia achieved their independence as a result of almost similar processes and were concurrently busy with state building, President Sargsyan noted that it could be one of the reasons that until now the reciprocal visits were not frequent. “We have got many similarities – we are comparable in terms of territory, population size and even historical destinies. I believe all of these can become a good basis for developing and strengthening our relations,” President Sargsyan said. According to the President of Armenia, Slovenia’s development pattern can be instructive for Armenia.

Underscoring that this is the first visit by the Slovenian President to Armenia, President Danilo Türk assured that the Armenian nation and its millennia long history are admired in his country. “History of Armenia is akin to that of few countries with rich and long history,” the President of Slovenia said, noting that it was symbolic that his visit took place when Yerevan - the oldest capital was celebrating its anniversary.

Speaking about the festival of Armenian culture organized last February in Ljubljana and assessing it as one of the most impressive cultural events held in Slovenia lately, Danilo Türk said that he had the opportunity to feel the depth of traditional and modern Armenian culture. “From the viewpoint of our future cooperation, among other areas, I see in particular the importance of cultural cooperation. Before coming to Armenia, I was reading a book about your country written by a Slovenian author Cvetko Zagorski. It’s a great book about your celebrated writer Tumanian, I was immensely impressed,” said the President of Slovenia.

The extended meeting of the two delegations was followed by the ceremony of document signing between the Governments of Armenia and Slovenia. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs signed the Agreement on Avoidance of Double Taxation and Income and Prevention of Tax Evasion, Economic Cooperation, on visa free regime for the holders of diplomatic passports. The Minister of Culture of Armenia signed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia the Agreement on Cooperation in the Area of Education, Science and Culture.

At the conclusion of the signing ceremony, President Serzh Sargsyan awarded Mitya Rotovnik with the Movses Khorenatsi medal for his significant contribution to the strengthening and development of the Armenian-Slovenian cultural ties and dissemination of Armenian culture in Slovenia.

Later, President Serzh Sargsyan and President Danilo Türk held joint press conference.
