Working visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to Kazakhstan

Today, in the framework of the OSCE Summit in Astana President Serzh Sargsyan continued series of meetings with the Heads of states and delegations, and representatives of international organizations.

Serzh Sargsyan met with the President of Hungary Pal Schmitt and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunya Miyatovich.

The Presidents of Armenia and Hungary stressed the existing warm and friendly relations of the two states which have been further strengthened by the creation of the Hungarian-Armenian friendship group in the Parliament of Hungary. President Sargsyan expressed gratitude to the people and authorities of Hungaria for their warm and kind attitude toward the Armenian community and creation of the favorable conditions for the community’s vitality.

Keeping in mind that next year Hungary will assume the EU Chairmanship, Serzh Sargsyan and Pal Schmitt spoke also about bilateral cooperation in international settings and the Armenia-EU relations. Pal Schmitt stressed the necessity of active cooperation of the two countries in the framework of the EU Eastern Partnership program.

President Sargsyan and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunya Miyatovich discussed activities of the OSCE structures in our country and highlighted the significance of the structures’ work from the viewpoint of strengthening democracy, assistance in the process of reformation, and protection of basic human rights. Dunya Miyatovich noted that they also cooperate closely with the Armenian government and non-governmental organizations for the improvement of the media-related legislation. The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media said that steps taken by Armenia toward the decriminalization of defamation and libeling would enhance freedom of the media and with this regard noted that it could become a good example for other OSCE member states.
