Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received Thomas Hammarberg, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe.

Stressing the importance of our country’s cooperation with the European structures, the President of Armenia noted in particular that the Council of Europe has a special place in the areas of human rights, strengthening of democracy, and rule of law.

“We believe that huge work has been done in our country in the last twenty years. At the same time, we do realize that there’s a long road ahead of us,” President Sargsyan said, and thanked Mr. Hammerberg for supporting reforms in Armenia.

In his turn, Thomas Hammerberg said that it is not only the Council of Europe which supports Armenia but Armenia too participates in and facilitates the activities of the CoE.

“The value of the Council of Europe lies in the fact that the Organization has adopted the principle of legal parity as a method. We learn from each other in the areas of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Just like last time, this time too I wanted to meet with You at the final stage of my visit to brief you on my impressions from the held meetings and talks,” said the CoE Commissioner for Human Rights.

At the meeting discussed were issues related to the future steps in the implementation of the reforms and protection of human rights in Armenia.
