President Serzh Sargsyan received the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule.

At the meeting discussed were issues pertinent to Armenia-EU relations and cooperation. The President noted that the high level meetings and discussions, which have taken place in the last twelve months, as well as the Joint Declaration to be signed today testify to the dynamically developing relations between Armenia and the European Union.

The EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy said that joint and active work can turn 2011 into a qualitatively new phase in the EU-Armenia relations.

Speaking about the Joint Declaration to be signed between the Government of Armenia and European Commission and stressing its importance, Stefan Fule underscored that the Declaration is aimed at bringing Armenia closer to the EU and at providing assistance in the process of reformation. According to President Sargsyan, this document reiterates Armenia’s determination to carry on with the reforms, while the European Commission reiterates its readiness to assist in the implementation of these reforms.

After the meeting with the President of Armenia, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Edward Nalbandian signed the Joint Declaration between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the European Commission. The Declaration welcomes the good progress made in the negotiations of the EU-Armenia Association Agreement and stress the importance of taking further steps by the Republic of Armenia towards meeting the conditions to launch negotiations for the establishing of a bilateral Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area in the framework of the future Association Agreement. The Parties also express commitment to pursue the political orientations of the European Neighborhood Policy through a reinvigorated engagement, to be set forth in a partnership for reform which will be developed jointly by the Government of Armenia and the European Commission. The Declaration also states that the Parties will identify areas of cooperation that could be the focus of our relations, with support of the EU tools and instruments.

The Declaration reasserts the strong commitment of the Republic of Armenia to continue with the reform process and underlines the readiness of the European Commission to provide increased support for their implementation, including through budget support, and the Comprehensive Institution Building (CIB) Program which has been agreed between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the European Commission.
