Remarks by President Serzh Sargsyan at the oath taking ceremony of the Mayor of Yerevan

Your Holiness,
Distinguished Members of the Yerevan Council,
Ladies and Gentlemen:

I congratulate us all on the election of the new Mayor of Yerevan. I wish him energy, tenacity, diligence, persistence and success on the honorary and responsible position of the Mayor of Yerevan.

I take this opportunity to thank former Mayor Karen Karapetian. His tenure was brief but it left its mark in the history of Yerevan. I wish him success in his new endeavors.

Taron Markarian is not a layman in the area of urban management of our capital and local governance. In Avan, he manifested himself as a skillful and caring leader, and earned respect and affection of the citizens through his work. And that respect and affection are not limited by Avan community or the Republican Party.

Today, he has assumed great responsibility toward our city and toward Markarian name. Taron, you have no right to let down us or your fellow citizens. We all are standing by you and are ready to always support and assist you. However, it is well-known that as good as support and assistance are, each person, each state official must master his own destiny, must work well. It is necessary to gather a large team of like-minded individuals and continue to solve the most urgent of Yerevan’s problems of all times – to alleviate concerns of the residents of our capital, to make Yerevan more convenient for its citizens and the guests of our ancient capital.

We are moving toward historic times. Many, if not all, will be speaking of unity. It is undoubtedly a truthful and commendable approach. However, it is necessary to define – what’s in the core of that unity? I believe the answer is self-evident: unity should be built around the system of values, values and laws. Every individual, who belongs to this system of values, is a like-minded person, our natural ally.

The Mayor, members of the Council and staff of the City Hall should maintain a constant contact with the population. A very nice tradition of community visits and meetings was established three years ago. The tradition should go on lest the municipal authorities lose the sense of reality and know absolutely accurately what are the concerns and problems of our capital.

Today, it is necessary to unite and help people, so that they care not only about their own homes, but also about their apartment building and back-yard and neighborhood, and ultimately, the entire city. This is the mission of the Mayor, Council and the staff of the City Hall.

I am confident that Mr. Markarian is ready to accomplish that mission with honor. I once again congratulate you cordially, Taron, and once again wish you resolve and determination.
