President Serzh Sargsyan, who is in Marseille (France) on a working visit, participated today as a Guest of Honor at the plenary meeting of the 20th Congress of the European People’s Party (EPP).

In his statement, the President of the EPP Wilfried Martens stressed the importance of the President Sargsyan’s presence at the EPP Congress, underscoring that the President of Armenia had arrived to Marseille on a fateful day for his country – December 7 – which commemorates the day when thousands of people were killed in the devastating earthquake in 1988. He also said that he remembers the solidarity that overwhelmed those who wanted to help Armenia. Addressing President Sargsyan, the President of the EPP said, “Dear Mr. President, you will find the same solidarity here, at the family of the European People’s Party. At our first meeting, I was impressed with Your forceful convictions, Your profound insight regarding the situation in the country and reforms to be implemented. You have initiated bold steps regarding Your neighbors, I mean, first of all, Turkey. You have undertaken very ambitions internal reforms. Armenia builds a peaceful democracy and that democracy should be consolidated. Armenia has become a market economy. Armenia has found its place on the international arena and now has directed its attention toward Europe.

Dear Mr. President, delegation of the EPP, which returned from Armenia two weeks ago, and which was there to evaluate applications of the four parties which have applied for a membership at the EPP, is full of enthusiasm. We have no doubt that Your Party – Republican Party of Armenia, as well as Orinats Erkir and Heritage can in the nearest future become constructive partners of the EPP. Decision on the membership at the EPP will be made at our Convention in February 2012.

Mr. President, from this day on, we consider You a member of the great family of the European People’s Party. We will be happy to welcome You tomorrow, at the Summit of EPP, along with the other leaders of our states and governments.”

Noting, that in Armenia tradition dictates to proudly wear one’s party badge, which demonstrates devotion to the values symbolized by the badge, Wilfried Martens handed to the President of Armenia, Chairman of the Republican Party Serzh Sargsyan a EPP badge. He underscored that it signifies dedication to EPP and EPP values. Wilfried Marten said that the Chairmen of the two other parties will receive their badges later on.

At the outset of his remarks about Armenia, the Chairman of EPP also said that Armenia is present in Europe, particularly in this part of France and that Armenia is a gate between East and West.
