President Serzh Sargsyan received the President of the European Court of Human Rights Dean Spielmann

 

President Serzh Sargsyan received today the President of the European Court of Human Rights Dean Spielmann.

Serzh Sargsyan welcomed the visit of the the President of ECHR to our country, particularly since it is taking place in connection with one of the events organized in the framework of Armenia’s Presidency at the EC Ministerial Committee – Conference on the European Standards of Rule of Law and the Scope of Discretion of Powers in the Member-States of the Council of Europe.

President Sargsyan noted that Armenia is an active member of the Council of Europe, which participates in the works of the Council at all levels, bringing her contribution to the processes within the Organization and formation of the pan-European agenda. He said that it is a great honor and responsibility for our country to assume presidency after twelve years of membership to the EC. Serzh Sargsyan hailed the role of ECHR in the protection of human rights of over 800 million people living in the EC member states.

Underscoring that the EC member states have different histories and present situations, but nevertheless are united by the common values, the President noted that Armenia wishes that ECHR be an efficiently functioning body. According to the President, with this regard Armenia has been and continues to support all processes and reforms which are aimed at the enhancement of the Court’s efficiency.

Noting that this is his first visit to Armenia, the President of ECHR Dean Spielmann stated with satisfaction that the visit is taking place during Armenia’s presidency at the EC Ministerial Committee. He spoke with appreciation of his productive talks held with the Armenian officials in the framework of the visit.

At the meeting, the President of Armenia and the President of ECHR exchanged views on the process of reformation of Armenia’s judicial system, our country’s cooperation with the European structures, importance of assistance provided for the implementation of the reforms, and spoke about the current activities of the ECHR.
