Armen Sarkissian: Combination of science and politics is important especially for the future

President Armen Sarkissian hosted today the Secretary General of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, Professor Paolo Cotta-Ramusino.

The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs is a reputable international platform which unites scientists, political and public figures determined to decrease the risks of armed conflicts and find solutions to confront global security challenges.
The Pugwash Conferences and its co-founder Joseph Rotblat in 1995 were awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

President Sarkissian said that he was well-aware of the ideas of the Pugwash Conferences with the participation of the world’s influential scientists, political and public figures, its objectives and hailed the efforts which they make to have a safe and secure world, free of weapons of mass destruction. Secretary General of the Noble Prize Winner Pugwash Conferences Paolo Cotta-Ramusino said that there was an intention to organize one of the conferences in Yerevan, in November. According to Professor Paolo Cotta-Ramusino, Armenia might become the best place for conducting a dialogue.

Welcoming the idea of organizing a conference in our country, President Sarkissian noted that this year several prestigious international gatherings would be held in Armenia. Attaching importance to the fact that scientists interested in politics and politicians interested in science would gather in one place, President Sarkissian said, “Combination of science and politics is important especially for the future, particularly in the context of new technologies and artificial logic.”

The President of Armenia expressed readiness to assist in conducting the Pugwash Conferences at the highest possible level.

The two physicists spoke also about rapid changes going on in the world, global risks and challenges, ways and avenues to resist and thwart them.
