President Vahagn Khachaturyan attended the 25th Anniversary Event of the Water Committee

President of the Republic Vahagn Khachaturyan attended the jubilee event marking the 25th anniversary of the Water Committee of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia.

During the event, speeches were delivered by President Vahagn Khachaturyan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Chairman of the Water Committee Aramazd Ghalamkaryan.

President Vahagn Khachaturyan’s address:

“Today we are marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Water Committee. This is an important period for the public administration system and, at the same time, a serious occasion to review the path we have taken and assess the issues that still require solutions.

The establishment of the Water Committee was driven by the need to ensure a systematic and state-responsible organization of water resources management, a sector of strategic importance for our country. Over the years, governance mechanisms have been formed, infrastructure programs have been implemented, and irrigation and reservoir systems have been maintained and operated. However, we must also acknowledge that high levels of water losses, system deterioration, and efficiency-related problems remain serious challenges.

Armenia is a country relatively well provided with water resources, but that alone is not sufficient. Water is a national treasure, and its preservation and rational use require more consistent policies, technological modernization, and a high level of managerial responsibility. In the context of climate change, shifting precipitation patterns, and growing water demand, every loss and every inefficient use becomes not only an economic but also a strategic issue.

This anniversary should be perceived not so much as a summary of achievements, but rather as a wake-up call. It reminds us that much work still lies ahead in this sector. It is necessary to deeply assess existing shortcomings and gaps, review the toolkit, rethink management approaches, and adopt more effective solutions. The role of the Water Committee must continue to strengthen, relying on professional capacity, accountability, and long-term strategic thinking.

At the same time, it must be clearly emphasized that the issue of water management is not limited to the authority of a single institution. Much depends on the coordinated work of state bodies, the effectiveness of community governance, and the attitude of every citizen. Developing a culture of water use, awareness of conservation, and personal responsibility should become part of public behavior. Water should be viewed not as an inexhaustible resource, but as a national value that must be preserved.

I am confident that through joint and consistent efforts it is possible to reduce losses, increase system efficiency, and develop a water management model that will correspond to Armenia’s long-term development goals.

May these 25 years serve not only as a reminder of the path taken, but also as a clear commitment to more responsible, efficient, and forward-looking work.”
