President Serzh Sargsyan received the Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mrs. Bushra Halepota

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received the Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Yerevan, Mrs. Bushra Halepota.

The President of Armenia praised assistance provided by the Yerevan Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and said that refugees were one of the most vulnerable parts of the society and with regard to their full integration the provided assistance was very important. Serzh Sargsyan expressed confidence that practical and efficient cooperation between Armenia and that important international structure would continue successfully.

The Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Yerevan, Mrs. Bushra Halepota thanked the President of Armenia for his constant attention toward the refugee related issues. She presented the activities conducted by the Office in 2008 and programs planned for 2009. Bushra Halepota expressed satisfaction on the adoption by Armenia of the “Law on Refugees and Asylum seekers” which corresponds to the European standards and noted that some provisions of the law related to the human rights of the refugees were incorporated in the curriculum of a number of educational institutions.

“Our goal is to eliminate as soon as possible the very concept of the refugee in our society,” – underlined the President of Armenia and noted that the state budget for 2009 allocates considerable amount of money to meet their needs. He also said that funds allocated for the needs of the refugees would increase along with the increase of the state resources.

The parties spoke also about the reformation of the migration structure of Armenia. The President of Armenia said, “We are interested in creating a new, modern structure while preserving the existing potential.”
