Today, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received the President of the Belgian Senate Armand De Decker and his delegation.

Welcoming the visit of the high guest to our country, President Sargsyan said, “I warmly recall our last year meeting and I am happy that you kept your promise and came to Armenia. We have good relations but they always need further development which is also enhanced by high-level visits.”

According to the President of Armenia, the Armenian-Belgian relations are progressing well in the economic area, in the area of interparliamentary relations, as well as through a dialogue between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries. “Unfortunately, the global economic and financial crisis has somewhat amended the prices for precious stones and as a result our trade turnover in 2009 has decreased. However, I believe we will be able to find avenues, ways and areas which will help us to increase it. We are optimistic in this regard and we also believe that our relations have great potential for development,” the President of Armenia underscored.

Serzh Sargsyan said that Armenia has a special attitude toward Belgium also due to the fact that Belgium accepted and embraced those who had escaped the scourges of the Armenian Genocide and settled in Belgium. Highlighting the importance of the Genocide’s international recognition, Serzh Sargsyan expressed gratitude to the Belgian Parliament for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

The President of the Belgian Senate thanked for the warm welcome and noted that the Armenian-Belgian relations were in fact on a very high level, and Belgium would always stay by Armenia’s side. According to Armand De Decker, it is also stipulated by the great role of the Armenian community of Belgium, which is present in all areas of the country’s life.

Noting, that the Armenian-Turkish relations were undergoing serious developments of truly historic proportions, the President of the Belgian Senate asked the President of Armenia to share his view regarding the process.

“Our people will never forget the Genocide and its dreadful consequences,” the President of Armenia underlined and continued “It is difficult to start relations with Turkey. On the other hand, we are neighbors and have to have relations. That’s the reason beyond our initiative to establish relations without preconditions. However, establishment of the relations does not mean to relinquish or doubt the very fact of the Genocide.” The President of Armenia stressed once again that from its very beginning the process has been conducted without preconditions.

President Sargsyan also presented to the President of the Belgian Senate Armenia’s approach to the NK peace process and its current stage.

The President of the Belgian Senate wished the President of Armenia success and said that the South Caucasus region was indeed a complicated place, with multiple problems. He added also that the resolution of all those problems one by one was on the right track.
