President Vahagn Khachaturyan received Nathalie Loiseau, Head of the European Parliament Election Observation Mission, and Mission Representatives
President of the Republic Vahagn Khachaturyan received Nathalie Loiseau, Head of the European Parliament Election Observation Mission, and members of the mission who arrived in Armenia in connection with the National Assembly elections.
Welcoming the guests, the President stated: “We are confident that we will conduct these elections at a high democratic standard. However, it is very important that our partners carry out an observation mission and provide their assessment of how effectively we ensure these standards.
I can say that these elections are of decisive importance for the future of our country. They are extremely significant and carry great importance.
In this regard, your presence, and the presence of the delegation of Members of the European Parliament to conduct an observation mission, is very important.
Taking this opportunity, I would also like to thank the European Union for its support in strengthening our country’s capacities and democratic resilience during the pre-election period.
I would like to assure you that we are genuinely committed to ensuring that the elections are conducted freely and in accordance with democratic standards, and that Armenia, once again after its elections, will demonstrate that it is a democratic country striving toward Europe.”
Expressing her gratitude for the reception, Nathalie Loiseau said: “It is an honor for me to lead this delegation of the European Parliament. We are six members representing four different nationalities and four different political groups.
For the European Parliament, not only these elections are important, but also the broader efforts to support democracy in Armenia.
You know that Parliament has taken steps to support democracy in Armenia. There have been reciprocal visits and initiatives, within the framework of which political leaders and members of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee have visited Brussels. Members of that committee, incidentally, visited Brussels earlier this year.
Of course, we have also adopted a resolution in support of Armenia’s democratic resilience.
We strongly support the peace and normalization agenda in which Armenia is engaged.
We were pleased that the first EU-Armenia Summit and the meeting of the European Political Community were recently held in Yerevan.”
During the meeting, the participants emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to ensure that elections are conducted in accordance with democratic principles, the rule of law, and all provisions of the legislation of the Republic of Armenia. The sides stressed that organizing free, fair, transparent, and competitive elections is one of the most important prerequisites for building a democratic state and a fundamental mechanism for citizens’ participation in governance.
The discussion also touched upon the overall pre-election atmosphere in the country, the progress of organizing the electoral process, as well as existing challenges and the measures being undertaken by state institutions and responsible bodies to address them effectively.
The sides discussed strengthening public trust in the electoral process, fully safeguarding citizens’ right to freely express their will, creating equal conditions for political competition, and increasing public confidence in election results.
In this context, the important role of independent and impartial election observation missions in ensuring transparency and public accountability in electoral processes was highlighted.
The sides also emphasized the significance of elections as a key factor in the continued development of democratic institutions and the strengthening of political culture, noting that the vitality of democracy depends not only on the organization of elections but also on active citizen participation, a high level of political responsibility, and the development of a culture of public dialogue.
The meeting also addressed the Armenia–European Union cooperation agenda, democratic reforms, institutional development, and programs aimed at increasing the effectiveness of public administration. Both sides emphasized the importance of further deepening Armenia–European Union partnership for the benefit of Armenia’s democratic progress, sustainable development, and the advancement of the peace agenda.
